My biology text explicitly states that becuase humans have "conquered" nature we have an obligation to preserve other life forms and the "wanton" consumption/killig of wildlife is uncivilized.

This, of course, is not a call to unite in veganism but it still makes me feel good that people (like myself) are becoming increasingly aware of the horrors being committed against animals and the environment.

11/30/09 07:24 am - [info]oxkrissy - Crazy weekend.

We had an extremely busy, but extremely productive and fun weekend/holiday.

On Thanksgiving, Curtis and I actually painted our kitchen in the morning until it was time to leave to head over to his Mom's for Thanksgiving dinner. We ate there - and probably spent two or three hours there - and then stopped over at my sisters for about an hour. We were stuffed, so we didn't have any food really there. I tasted a few things, but I don't think Curtis had room for anything. Curtis' grandparents always have something at their house in the evening, so after we left my sisters we went up there for ham and deserts. I'm not used to busy holidays because my family always stayed in one spot pretty much and it was always really calm - now that I have two different families to visit, it's kind of chaotic. I miss the easy going holiday, but I'm slowly getting used to it.

Friday and Saturday we got the chance to visit with one of our best friends who moved up to New York. He was back for a few days for Thanksgiving. :) I was so glad to see him, and we had a ton of fun while he was around. Wish he would move back home. :( Here are some pictures if you're interested:

Also, we got tons done on our kitchen.. Pictures Below. Mom has been over tons to help lately because she hasn't had to work. It's been a really huge help to us. She is coming over later actually to help me finish up painting.

And yesterday we got our Christmas tree! :) :)

When I ride the train home after work late at night, the harsh fluorescent glare of the carriage lights means that looking out the window yields only a reflection of my tired face.

Fortunately, I hardly ever see it. I'm too absorbed in the shape of my thoughts.

Are you a vegan? How long have you been one? Have you noticed any health benefits - mental or physical?

What are your favorite vegan sites or cookbooks?

11/30/09 11:02 am - [info]words_fail

A few weeks ago I started contemplating the idea of becoming a vegan. Not for moral or ethical reasons, but simply because I wanted to be healthier. I stopped eating red meat two months ago, and yesterday I dropped dairy and eggs from my diet. I currently consume chicken and fish, but will be removing chicken very shortly. I’m still not entirely convinced that fish is bad for you, so I may keep it as part of my diet for a while longer. Currently, I’m finding it a little difficult to get all my calories for the day and only managed to consume about 1000 yesterday. Ideally, I should be getting around 1650 if I want to maintain my current weight. My first day being dairy free looked like this:

Breakfast:

1 cup Special K
1/2 cup soy milk

Snack:

1 apricot
1 apple
1/2 banana
1/2 peach
8 pieces papaya

Lunch:

Salad with carrots, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, alfalfa sprouts, mixed nuts and cucumber

Dinner:

Chili containing beans, mushrooms, chili peppers, yellow pepper, onion, garlic, tomatoes, ground chicken
Crackers

Snack:

chocolate soy pudding
strawberries
raspberries

1. What does safety mean to you

2.What do you need in order to feel safe.

3. What are some of the things you do in terms of self care when you are in crisis or afterwards.

Comments are screened.
